A Federal Tax ID Number, also known as an Employer Identification Number or (EIN) is simply a 9 digit number assigned to certain business entities. If you will hire employees, you're required to have a Federal Tax ID Number.

To keep this quick and simple, we're only going to run through the form assuming you don't have a corporation or llc formed - i.e., as if you were a sole proprietor, or a general partnership.

There are three types of tax ids:

1. A Federal Tax Id number

2. A State Tax Id Employer Number

3. A State Seller's Permit Buyer's Tax ID Number

Here is how you fill out the form:

When you apply, Line 1 will ask you for a business legal structure - Write  the legal name of the entity getting the Tax ID Number. Enter the name of the individual. Otherwise, just give the name of your business.

Line 2 - The business name of your business, if it's different than line one. This is common for sole proprietors that "DBA" do business.

Lines 4 through 6 - about the location of your business.

Lines 7a and 7b - name of the principle officer, owner or partner and SS#, ITIN or EIN.
