List of Legal Requirements you Need to Consider Before Starting Your Business

In General, in most states and jurisdictions, it is unlawful for any person or business, to carry on any business, trade, profession, calling, occupation or gainful activity without one or more of the following business license registrations:

• DBA , DBA ,

• Federal Tax Id Number,

• State Tax Id Number / employer identification number,

• Wholesale / Retail License / Reseller License ,

• Business license registration tax Document and / or a

• Home occupation permit.

1.  Business License

• All Businesses are  required to obtain  a  Business License -   

  • (Note: A corporation, Limited Liability Company or DBA filing is NOT a business license filing).

2.  DBA

• Businesses using a  name other than the owner's name  are required to register a DBA / DBA Document.

3.  State Tax Id Number / Employer Identification Number EIN

• Businesses that are Employers are required to obtain a  State Tax Id   (EIN) and a Federal Tax Id  (FEIN) 

  • NOTE: Sole owners can use a federal Tax Id Number to build business credit

4.  Seller's  Permit / Resale / Reseller's License / Sales State Tax Id Number

• Wholesalers, retailers of taxable goods / services require a  Wholesale License or otherwise called a Seller's  Permit

5.  Federal Tax Id Employer Identification Number FEIN

•  Corporations or Limited Liability Company s, Employers, and, in some states,  those Businesses that are also getting a Wholesale / Retail License are required to obtain a Federal Tax Id  (FEIN)   and a  Business License.

6.  Corporation or Limited Liability Company

• A Corporation or Limited Liability Company Filing will Eliminate Personal Legal and Financial Liability, save taxes, and protect your personal assets.

7.  Partnership Agreement

• Partnerships and Limited Liability Company s should Have an Operating Agreement

Note that in most cases, you will be held liable for back taxes, be subjected to misdemeanor charges as well as be disrupted from normal business operations if you don't obtain these legal documents.
